๐˜ผ๐™ก๐™ก ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐˜ฟ๐™š๐™ซ๐™ž๐™ก๐™จ ๐™–๐™ง๐™š ๐™ƒ๐™š๐™ง๐™š, Patrick Page's excellent one-man Shakespearean show, is at The Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota after a strong run that generated very positive reviews in New York last year around this time. We attended the Minneapolis show and it was amazing, thoughtfully-written and edited, and very nicely supported with simple lighting and costume effects, but Page's acting is really the centerpiece. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune calls it "One of 2024′s best shows":

The show has been designed in such a way that one does not have to know entire plots of the plays from which the villains lines are taken: Page gives enough information as needed, and then dives in, and it is all remarkably effective.

The title comes from Shakespeare’s late play, ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜›๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ต: “Hell is empty, and all the devils are here.” Page explores some of the most famous villains, most of them male, but a few female, and he also admits in part of the show that Shakespearean heroes are not without their own evil moments, including Hamlet and Henry V. (One might assume Page is thinking of Henry V, threatening to commit what we would consider war crimes against a town if they do not surrender; and Hamlet playing God, delaying the killing of Claudius so that he can damn him....)

Page is famous in part for his deep-voiced villains: for his role in a Broadway musical version of Spider-Man; for playing Hades in Hadestown; Scar in a Broadway version of Lion King; and for a recent performance in King Lear. He obviously knows his Shakespeare, and it shines in the script of this show and in Page’s performance.

PlayBill's Margaret Hall notes that the show "was originally scheduled as a one-night-only benefit at Cherry Lane Theatre in February 2020. It was presented on film through the Shakespeare Theatre Company in 2021 and was made available for streaming for a limited audience. The solo show began performances Off-Broadway September 29, 2023."

There is still time to see ๐˜ผ๐™ก๐™ก ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐˜ฟ๐™š๐™ซ๐™ž๐™ก๐™จ ๐™–๐™ง๐™š ๐™ƒ๐™š๐™ง๐™š in Minneapolis at The Guthrie through November 17th. I highly recommend it. Tickets can be purchased at THIS LINK:
